ABCG history

The ABCG is a motivated group of volunteers from a wide range of backgrounds. It began as the Ansons Bay Progress and Planning Association in 2002 as a community led action group. There were a number of pressing issues that required urgent attention, including:
* the growing shack site concerns surrounding freehold and leasehold land, and the threats of shack removal.
* the desire for a dedicated boat ram and jetty.
* foreshore access and amenities.
* Bay/ocean access, navigation, rock dangers and boat safety.

These issues, and others, were vigorously debated and pursued with success by a dedicated group.
Increased action (circa 2006/7) saw innovation with regard to sewerage and waste disposal for shacks on the Bay edge. There was also more attention to fire reduction and safety, dog management AND telecommunications.

Increased action (circa 2006/7) saw innovation with regard to sewerage and waste disposal for shacks on the Bay edge. There was also more attention to fire reduction and safety, dog management AND concerns about telecommunications.

From 2009, there was further work on road sealing, signage, and the emerging planning schemes that affected the Bay. There was increased consultation with Parks and the BODC as the group became more efficient and effective.

By 2011, there was further success in regard to rezoning issues, beach access, local walking trails and bridgework, weed control, and a notice board for information.

By 2016 work continued around the waste transfer issues, a community de-fib, fire reduction AND telecommunications. That reality would take another 10 years!

Our achievements

After incorporation, the ABCG has continued the work of the previous committee with a more focused agenda. Among many other achievements, it has:

Lobbied and liaised with the relevant authorities to secure fit-for-purpose telecommunications for the Bay. The initial work of the committee group was continued by Liz Stringer and Brian Mitchell and they deserve particular acknowledgement.

Obtained signage for local information, speed regulation, children’s safety, and beach access.

Lobbied for Boat Ramp improvements and amenities in that location.

Provided of a community library for book exchange for the community.

Lobbied for road improvements and repairs.

Obtained an emergency response trailer to assist the community when the Bay is threatened or isolated.

Participated in weed management activity in partnership with Parks.

Provided Easter Events to bring the community together and celebrate the Bay.

Our Mission

We celebrate the unique coastal character of Ansons Bay, supporting environmental stewardship, helpful community connections, and welcoming spaces for recreation.

We commit to representing the Bay to facilitate appropriate development and preserving its unique qualities. The challenge is to strike a balance between preserving the character of the Bay, and taking advantage of the benefits of regional progress.

The ABCG Inc. Constitution sets out the parameters of their functions including objectives and membership, together with the usual organisational framework.

Fundamentally the ABCG’s primary focus is:

1. To represent the Ansons Bay Community Group Inc by providing equal and every opportunity for all to contribute to their community.

2. To work collaboratively and transparently with all stakeholders including the community members, Break O’Day Council, Tasmanian Parks and Wildlife Service, and any other organisations to meet the community goals and objectives.

Ansons Bay sits on one of the most beautiful stretches of coastline in Tasmania — white sand, sheltered lagoons, orange granite boulders, and native bush as far as you can see.

We will include a gallery of photographs of the area, and invite you to submit your own photographs (JPEG format please) for inclusion in the gallery.

Submissions can be forwarded by email on the gallery page.
